Tim Mastik (b, 1986 Rotterdam, The Netherlands: works in Rotterdam) is a self-taught artist whose work explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Driven by a fascination with form, repetition, symmetry, and material, he creates works that are both constructive and intuitive. Mastik deconstructs his compositions and plays with rhythm, creating an unexpected dynamic between color and form. At first glance, his works may seem simple, but upon closer inspection, they reveal a layered structure and a carefully considered interplay between matter and surface.

Mastik’s practice is driven by experimentation with materiality. By actively manipulating paint and texture—sanding, layering, and reapplying—he examines how physical interventions can alter the perception of color and form. This process, which can take months, results in works where time and labor are tangibly present. His fascination with the act of making, the traces of action, and the impact of industrial techniques forms a recurring theme throughout his oeuvre.

Rooted in geometry and minimalism, his work resonates with broader art historical movements. His investigation into surface and texture aligns with material painting, while his engagement with rhythm and repetition echoes the systematic structures of minimalism and the works of iconic painters such as Richter, Martin, and Kelly. Mastik does not see his work as a representation but as an autonomous object—a form that raises questions rather than providing answers.
